QUICK ANSWER

The stable Java default is Verity JE 5.7.4 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge; its 6.0.0 files are beta. The older JE NeoForge branch is deprecated, while Verity Revamped is separate. Current Bedrock routes are PnTMC 4.0.0 and Verity BE 4.0.0 for 26.40.

Version number is not the only match

A compatible install must match edition, Minecraft version, loader, project, and dependencies. A newer Minecraft number does not make the deprecated NeoForge branch the better default.

Freshness behavior

If a source fetch fails, the last verified record remains visible with its previous checked date. We do not replace it with zeros, mark it freshly updated, or guess the next release.
